Cashbox ATMs to Offer Wifi

The next time you halt at a remote location to use a Cashbox ATM, you may also be stepping into a BT Openzone Wifi hotspot.

Ciaran Morton, CEO of Cashbox, has declared that his company and BT have entered into an arrangement to offer Wifi services using Cashbox’s fee-charging cash machines. Morton explained that the service would initially be made available in ten of the 2500 Cashbox ATMs including Tiger Tiger branches in London, Manchester and Glasgow. More ATMs are likely to add to the count over time if the initiative proves to be successful. If things go well you may see a lot of them in the next five years.

Cashbox ATMs are predominantly located in areas where there is a dearth of financial services as there aren’t many high street banks found in those areas. Such areas are also usually deprived of WiFi penetration. The Wifi service would be accessible to BT broadband customers with inclusive Wifi minutes. O2, iPhone, Boingo, and iPass users can also access the Openzone hotspots.

It has been announced that BT would share with Cashbox, a portion of the revenue generated from users of the Wifi service at sites. So here’s an ATM that will be handing out money but will also give you a lot more. If this move is well received and taken up by users, a person surfing the mobile internet on a laptop outside a Cashbox ATM may turn out to be a familiar sight in the near future.
